  A balanced chemical reaction does not necessarily reveal either the individual elementary reactions by which a reaction occurs or its rate law. A reaction mechanism is the microscopic path by which reactants are transformed into products. Each step is an elementary reaction. From the point of view of determination of kinetic rates, isothermal conditions are preferred. Kinetic data for simple reactions with well defined stoichiometry can also be obtained from adiabatic runs, but interpretation of non-isothermal runs is usually extremely tedious and is to be avoided.
